KEY NOTE SPEAKER CAROL BOWSER “BUILDING TRUST” LEADERSHIP’S NEW IMPERATIVE Page 2 WSHHRA NOTES 2011 President’s Report –Steve Stahl Carol Bowser founded Con- flict Management Strategies in 2002 which is a company emphasizing training, media- tion, and consulting on con- flict resolution. After several years of practicing Employ- ment Law, Ms. Bowser decid- ed to go to step out and begin to work with organizations in preventing costly workplace conflict. Ms. Browser began the session by asking each of the attendees three questions in regards to building trust in our work environments. 1. Where are we? 2. Where do we want to be? 3. How do we get there? She then began to take us on a journey that had us do both individual and group reflec- tion on our role models and how they demonstrate Vision, Execute their vision, Inspire, Build trust, Build Relation- ships, Seek counsel, Handle conflict, Say “No”, Strengthen personal bonds; and Live, Love, Laugh. Carol gave us the ingredients to a Trust Conversation that includes a 4-step workout of Notice (the emotional cli- mate), Ask (courageous to ask the questions) Acknowledge and Problem Solve. While there is only one change to make a good im- pression, there are multiple opportunities every day to acknowledge people’s con- cerns. In doing so, we begin to build trust. Carol stated that Acknowledgment is a very powerful tool. Trust Inspires Trust! We were left with two questions to ponder. 1. How do you show people you are worthy of one’s trust. 2. How can we establish a culture of trust? For more information on man- aging conflict go to : www.ManagingConflict.com I wanted to thank everyone for the opportunity to be the WSHHRA President-Elect in 2010 and the WSHHRA President in 2011. I have enjoyed every minute and am excited to pass the torch to our 2012 President Beki Lischalk. She has many exciting ideas on how WSHHRA can have tremendous achieve- ments and growth in 2012. But mostly I wanted to say thanks for all the support and sharing that has happened this past year. It has been great meeting many of you and I hope that you will continue to include me in the professional conversations that we all have in our day to day lives as a Healthcare HR Professional. Also, we had a great year financially thanks to the hard work of the board, the increased participation of members and the interest shown by our Business Partners. A special thanks to our Busi- ness Partners. Marlo, you did a great job in managing our finances. Thanks for everything you do for us. And to the 2011 WSHHRA board: Beki Lischalk, Jolene Seda, Amanda Adams, Donna Haynes, Lisa McDaniel, Marlo Willis, Kathryn Duby, and Carolyn Tucker – it has been my privilege serving with you on the WSHHRA board. Here’s to a great 2012. 2011 Goals 1) Retention of all members . Final achievement: close but still needs some work. . Total 2011 membership 215 . Total 2010 membership 225 . Total 2009 membership 185 . We had 80 new members in 2011 compared to 92 in 2010. We maintained our membership in a year when a recession brought many budget cuts for HR and member organizations. Many HR professionals that were previous members left healthcare and hence ineligible to join. . We did have a drive to increase membership from organizations that typically have not joined WSHHRA in the past such as Primary Care Clinics, Long Term Care Facilities, PT and OT facilities, Mental Health facilities, and oth- ers. We do deem this initiative a success with new members from these areas and hopefully will continue to expand to other areas of healthcare. 2) Enhance Communication . List Serv via Google Groups activated . Facebook page activated . LinkedIn group expanded . Update-all three goals achieved 3) Highest quality services (specifically educa- tion) . Continue to improve program quality measured through conference feedback. In our Fall con- ference feedback, 97% felt the speakers were very good or excellent and 94% felt the confer- ence was an excellent place to network. . This goal is constantly in progress as new topics and interests come up daily for Healthcare HR Professionals . We did participate in one webinar just for WSHHRA and had participants from Oregon and Hawaii join us 4) Expand participation of existing member- ship. . We had several people participate in the plan- ning of our conferences with help in programs, venues for dinner and conferences . We expanded our board to include more partici- pation . We actually had interest in our open board positions this year . Thank all of you for stepping up and participat- ing Steve Stahl 2011 WSHHRA Chapter President PICTURES FROM FALL 2011 RETREAT LAKE CHELAN WSHHRA is dedicated to the development of the visionary and strategic abilities of healthcare human resource professionals to be influential in advancing the business and community interests of their organizations.
