NEW MEDICAL ASSISTANT LAW

EFFECTIVE JULY 1, 2013

The 2012 legislature passed a bill that creates four medical assistant credentials in Washington State; medical assistant-certified, medical assistant-registered, medical assistant-phlebotomist, and medical assistant-hemodialysis technician. This law has been codified as chapter 18.360 RCW with an effective date of July 1, 2013. These new medical assistant credentials will replace existing health care assistant certifications. The Department of Health will not issue health care assistant credentials after July 1, 2013. Medical assistants may be supervised by allopathic physicians, osteopathic physicians, allopathic physician assistants, osteopathic physician assistants, advanced registered nurse practitioners, naturopaths, optometrists, and registered nurses. To learn more about the health care assistant to medical assistant transition process, or to get general information regarding the laws and implementation of the medical assistant credentials, please visitwww.doh.wa.gov, click on the green “topics A to Z” on upper right side of the homepage, and find medical assistants.

2012 MetLife Scholarship Winner

Steven Stahl

2012 Outstanding Chapter Leader

Steven jumped right into the President Elect position.  Right from the start he created organizational folders and systems to help future leaders take over the position and transition more effectively into the role.

During Steven’s leadership he was able to expand the participation of our Business Partners, and also helped us create a brand new sponsorship structure, which has added to the financial success of the organization.  Steven also helped created more structure and communication within the board, bringing back a Board planning and transition retreat in February to help the board become a cohesive high functioning team prior to major work that occurs during the course of the year.

Steven was also instrumental in connecting our chapter with members from other regional states looking for professional networking opportunities as their home states either did not have a State Chapter or the Chapter was not strong (Oregon).   Although Steven became our Regional Consultant, he is still active in the Board as the Past President and has not slowed down despite what has to be an incredibly difficult job to balance both roles and give 100% to both.
